Mathoja Coffee: A Story Grown in the Mountains
Urrao, that magical corner of Antioquia surrounded by mountains, páramos, and creeks, holds many well-kept secrets. One of them is Mathoja, a coffee born not only from fertile soil but also from the resilient spirit of its people.
Mathoja is more than just coffee. It is a story of transformation, environmental awareness, and rural pride. Grown at over 2,000 meters above sea level in the heart of the Penderisco Valley, its unique microclimate and altitude create ideal conditions for rich, distinct flavor profiles.
A Coffee Grown by Brave Hands
Among the varieties blended into Mathoja is a rare bean known for its complexity in the cup. It is mostly cultivated and harvested by women heads of household, many of whom are survivors of Colombia’s armed conflict. Each bean carries a story of resilience and hope.
This coffee undergoes a special treatment: lactic fermentation using probiotic bacilli. This not only enhances the sensory characteristics of the beans, but also significantly reduces water usage by eliminating the need to wash off the mucilage, thus protecting nearby creeks and water sources. It’s a more sustainable and thoughtful approach.
Mathoja: Specialty Coffee with Purpose
After harvesting, the beans are carefully selected, milled, and roasted in one of Colombia’s most trusted specialty roasters, located in Andes, Antioquia. The coffee is then packaged in high-quality bags with one-way valves that release natural gases while preventing oxygen from entering — preserving freshness and flavor.
Mathoja features an exclusive blend of beans like Caturro and Tabi, offering floral notes, medium-high acidity, and a silky body with smooth chocolate undertones. Every cup is a sensory experience that connects you with the land and the hands that nurture it.
Mathoja Coffee Cream: The Spirit of Coffee, Bottled
From the same passion behind the coffee comes the Mathoja Coffee Cream, a handcrafted cocktail-style liqueur that blends tradition with creativity. Its base is biche liquor, an ancestral Afro-Colombian spirit distilled from sugarcane juice.
The biche used in Mathoja is aged in oak barrels, which brings smoothness and depth to the final product. This base is blended with cold brew coffee from the same farms, along with high-quality ingredients like oats, malt, chocolate, and dairy creams.
The result is a rich, velvety beverage — ideal for sharing during desserts or special occasions. Each bottle is made in small batches, entirely by hand, ensuring quality and character in every sip.
