The Cacique Toné Festival: The Soul of Urrao That Beats Every June
By a heartfelt Urraeño
There are moments in a town’s life that define its essence, and for us Urraeños, those moments come every year when the cobblestone streets of our beloved municipality dress up in celebration to honor the brave Cacique Toné. As someone who has grown up among these mountains and has lived each of these celebrations since childhood, I can say with certainty that nothing fills me with more pride than seeing how our history comes alive in every parade, in every dance, in every smile of those who visit us.
The Warrior We Never Forget
When I walk through the streets of Urrao, especially in the mornings when the mist still embraces our mountains, I can’t help but think of Cacique Toné and his people, the Embera, who more than 500 years ago defended with honor this land we now call home. This brave indigenous leader not only resisted the Spanish conquest in the 16th century, but became the eternal symbol of our resistance and dignity.
The episode of 1539, when Toné led the attack against the conquistadors after being forced to pay tribute, resonates in Urrao every time I see our people participating in the comparsas. It’s as if the warrior spirit of our cacique continues to beat in each one of us, reminding us that culture and identity are defended with passion and pride.
Our Festivals: Where Three Cultures Dance Together
The Cacique Toné Festival is not just a celebration; it’s the time of year when Urrao becomes the beating heart of Antioquian cultural diversity. As a witness to decades of these festivities, I have seen how indigenous, Afro-descendants, and mestizos unite in a symphony of colors, flavors, and traditions that makes every corner of our town vibrate.
The comparsa parade is, without a doubt, the most emotional moment. Seeing more than two thousand people walking through our main streets, from the plaza to the park, carrying in their costumes and dances the living history of our region, is something that gives me chills every year. The children with their painted faces, the elderly telling stories between dance and dance, the young people passionately interpreting the traditions of their ancestors… It’s pure Urraeño magic.
The Festival That Defines Us
At the end of June and beginning of July, our Urrao transforms. The streets that are normally quiet fill with music ranging from traditional Embera airs to cumbia and vallenato. The aromas of our traditional sancochos compete in the air with the incense of indigenous ceremonies, creating a unique mixture that can only be experienced here.
What You Can’t Miss:
The Cacique Toné Parade: This is the climax of our festival. Seeing the historical representations, the floats decorated with indigenous motifs, and feeling how the entire community unites in a single cry of pride for our heritage, is an experience that transcends the folkloric to become something spiritual.
The Gastronomic Contests: As a good Urraeño, I can’t fail to mention our famous sancocho contests. Each family has its secret recipe, and the competition is fierce but always fraternal. The aroma that invades the town during these contests is simply irresistible.
Music Nights: When the sun sets over our mountains, the plaza becomes a natural stage where local and national artists delight us with their interpretations. I have seen tears of emotion in the eyes of our elders when they hear the traditional melodies.
Cultural Workshops: For the little ones, these spaces are fundamental. Seeing how our children learn about Embera culture, paint their little faces like small warriors, and participate in children’s parades, fills me with hope about the future of our traditions.
More than Folklore: Our Living Identity
What makes our Cacique Toné Festival special is not just the scheduled events, but what they represent for us as a community. Every year, when these dates arrive, I feel how the bonds that unite us as Urraeños are strengthened. I see families who have scattered around the world return home, I see our young people rediscover pride in their roots, I see visitors moved to tears by witnessing the authenticity of our traditions.
These festivals remind us that we are descendants of warriors, of people who knew how to defend their own with honor. They teach us that diversity is our strength, that indigenous, Afro-descendants, and mestizos can dance together to the rhythm of the same history. They show us that Urrao is not just a point on the map of Antioquia, but a heart that beats strongly, preserving ancestral memories while embracing the future.
